Beginners Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Milton Keynes.

Frequently Asked Questions

We know starting something new like BJJ can come with a lot of questions — and that’s completely normal.

To help put your mind at ease, we’ve answered the most common questions our beginner students ask before joining the program. If one person’s wondering it, chances are others are too.

If there’s anything we’ve missed, just head over to our Contact Us page and send us a message — we’re always happy to help.

I’ve never done anything like this before. Will I be okay?

Yes — 100%. This program was built specifically for people who are completely new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. You don’t need to know any terminology, movements, or techniques. We’ll guide you step by step, and you’ll train alongside others who are just as new as you are.

You’re not expected to be brave, fit, or skilled when you walk in — just curious enough to try.

What should I wear to my first session?

For your trial or first class, all you need is comfortable gym clothing — a t-shirt and shorts or joggers. Avoid anything with zips, metal, or sharp edges (they can scratch during close contact).

We train No-Gi, so there’s no need to wear or buy a traditional kimono (gi). If and when you want to get gear, we’ll give you trusted links and guidance — but you don’t need anything fancy to start.

Do I need to be fit to start BJJ?

Not at all. This program is how many people get fit. You’ll improve your strength, movement, cardio, and coordination by simply showing up and training regularly.

You won’t be doing endless burpees or drills for the sake of it. Every bit of movement is purposeful, progressive, and adaptable — and we’ll always coach you based on where you are right now, not where someone else is.

What happens in a typical class?

Each session is 1 hour long and follows a unique structure based on the Constraints-Led Approachmeaning you’ll learn by doing. We usually play 4 movement-based games that develop specific parts of your jiu-jitsu (for example, escaping bad positions or maintaining control).

Each game is explained, coached live, and run in a way that helps you explore and improve — not just memorise moves. There’s no standing in lines. No endless drilling. It’s hands-on, fun, and focused.

How is this different from a normal BJJ class?

Most gyms run mixed-level classes, which can be intimidating and confusing when you’re just starting. You’re often expected to keep up without much support.

Our 12-week program is the opposite. It’s only for beginners. That means you get dedicated coaching, a consistent group of people at your level, and a structured progression that builds on itself each week.

You’ll never feel like you’re being left behind — because the program is designed for people just like you.

What if I have an injury or need to rest during class?

You’re always in control. If you need a drink, a breather, or a moment to reset — take it. You won’t need to ask permission or explain yourself. We treat adults like adults.

We also modify games or training formats if you’re carrying a knock or recovering from something. You won’t be expected to “tough it out.” Your safety and longevity always come first.

What if I can’t make every session?

Consistency helps — but perfection isn’t required. If you miss a session here or there, you won’t fall behind. The way we coach makes it easy to jump back in.

Every phase of the program is structured so that skills are revisited and reinforced through live games. Plus, your coach and training partners will always help you catch up if needed.

Is this a fight gym? Will I get thrown around?

Absolutely not. We don’t do macho nonsense, and we don’t throw beginners into sparring to “toughen them up.”

All of our training is live and pressure-tested, but controlled, coached, and safe. You’ll be taught how to move, connect, defend, and progress — at a pace that challenges you without overwhelming you.

It’s about learning, not proving something.

Will I be the only beginner?

Not at all. Everyone in the program is a beginner — or just slightly ahead of you in the journey. You won’t feel out of place or behind.

Even those one phase ahead of you remember exactly what it felt like to be new — and that creates a genuinely supportive training environment. People want you to succeed here.

How much does it cost?

The full 12-week program costs £120 per month, for 3 months. That gives you:

  • Two structured sessions per week

  • A progressive, 3-phase curriculum

  • Personalised coaching in a group setting

  • An environment designed to help beginners thrive

Can I try a free session first?

Yes — we always offer a free trial. It’s your chance to see the gym, meet the team, try the training, and get a feel for whether it’s right for you.

There’s no pressure to sign up — just a genuine opportunity to explore what BJJ could look like in your life.

What happens after the 12 weeks?

Once you’ve completed the program, you’ll have a solid foundation of skills, confidence, and understanding. Most students choose to continue by joining the club as a full member — and when you do, you’ll already know the environment, the people, and the system.

You won’t be starting from scratch again. You’ll be building on something solid — and ready for the next chapter in your journey.
