So, you’ve been thinking about trying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). Maybe you want to get fit, maybe you’re curious about martial arts, or maybe you just want to try something new that isn’t another treadmill session at the gym. But then the nerves kick in: “What actually happens in a BJJ class? Am I going to get thrown around? Do I need a special outfit?”
If that sounds familiar, don’t worry. At Viking Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Milton Keynes, we run a 12-week beginner programme designed especially for people with zero experience. Here’s exactly what you can expect from your first class with us.
A Warm Welcome (Literally with a Handshake)
Walking into any martial arts gym for the first time can feel intimidating. At Viking BJJ, we keep it simple: you’ll be greeted with a handshake, introduced to the group, and reminded that everyone in the room once started as a beginner. You’re not expected to know anything – your only job is to show up and have a go.
No Gi? No Problem
Unlike some clubs that require a traditional gi (the kimono-style uniform), our beginner course is all no-gi. That means all you need is a t-shirt and shorts or gym gear – -something comfortable you can move in. No fancy kit required, no hidden costs.
The Structure of Your First Class
Each session follows a clear structure, so you’ll always know what’s happening:
- Warm-Up Game (Standing)
Instead of push-ups or running laps, we start with a fun, live-action game that gets you moving, laughing, and loosening up. It’s a great ice-breaker and warms up your body without feeling like a bootcamp. - Three Games on the Topic of the Day
Every week has a theme:- Chest to Back (taking the back safely and controlling)
- Chest to Chest (pinning and holding positions)
- Destabilisation, Balance & Passing (learning how to off-balance and move past someone’s guard).
“Isn’t That Just Sparring?”
Yes and no. All our games are live action, which means they feel like sparring, but they’re constrained and safe. Instead of being thrown into the deep end, you’ll be guided through situations where the rules keep things controlled.
This way, you get all the excitement of testing yourself, without the overwhelm of a full sparring round. Most beginners are surprised by just how much fun this is and how quickly they forget their nerves once they start playing.
What Beginners Are Often Surprised By
The number one thing new students say after class?
👉 “I didn’t expect to enjoy it that much.”
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has a way of pulling you in. Because you’re learning through games rather than long lectures, it feels more like play than “training.” You’ll leave sweaty, smiling, and maybe a little bit hooked.
Why Viking BJJ is Different
Lots of martial arts clubs say they welcome beginners. But at Viking BJJ, our entire 12-week course is built for people who have never done martial arts before. Whether you’re 18 or 40, male or female, super fit or just getting started, you’ll fit right in.
We’re based just outside Wolverton in Milton Keynes, close to the train station, so we’re easy to reach whether you’re local or commuting.

Beginner FAQ
Do I need to be fit before starting BJJ?
Not at all. Training will improve your fitness naturally as you go. Many beginners start with low fitness levels and see quick improvements in stamina and strength.
Will I get hurt?
BJJ is one of the safest martial arts because it’s based on control and technique, not striking. Our beginner games are designed to be safe, structured, and beginner-friendly.
Do I need any martial arts experience?
Nope! Most people at Viking BJJ start from scratch. You’ll learn everything step by step.
What if I feel nervous?
That’s completely normal – everyone does. After a handshake, a laugh in the first game, and a good sweat, most beginners forget they were nervous at all.
Ready to Try Your First Class?
If you’ve read this far, you’re probably curious enough to give it a go. The truth is, the hardest part is walking through the door the first time. After that, you’ll realise everyone’s here to learn, laugh, and improve together.
